The Dust Has Come To Stay

References, Research and inspiration from SS26:

The opening sequence of Paris Texas sees Travis travelling through the desert in a pinstripe suit. This is probably the most obvious reference we made. Reimagining this set, adding Western collars and tailoring.

This is the motel that Travis and Walt pass through on the journey home. Neon roadside signs feel so engrained in Americana that we wanted to do something with it. We changed the idea slightly going for a drive through theatre, but took inspiration from the cursive font.

The V yoke is one of the most recognisable features of western era apparel. It offers extra support against wear. We included this on our Stanton jacket alongside twin inverted pleats taken from vintage café racer jackets.

Practically a character in the film, we wanted to feature the shape of the state within some of the graphics. It’s used across our playing cards, the map in its entirety heavily influenced our bandana, and we used it across our Ranchero T-Shirt, referencing the characters journey.

Another Motel sign from the film.  It’s only on screen for a couple of seconds, but we wanted to find a way to make use of it. We extracted and finished the graphic, adding it to our Wayfarer set and Stanton Jacket. 

To add a further connection to the desert we designed and cast an oversized scorpion lapel pin in matte metal. A symbol of protection and resilience.

One of the most iconic shots of the film features Travis alone in a car park. Watching his family he’s reunited before heading off alone again. 

The green hue is so striking we reference it. We sponge dyed it onto our Railroad bombers. The double zip on the front of this style is also intended to echo the train tracks Travis wanders down.

Before Shooting begun for Paris, Texas, Wim Wenders went on a two month research trip, documenting the barren landscape and decaying architecture. This photo series served as huge inspiration for the visual tone of Paris, Texas and our collection.

This Billboard doesn’t actually feature in the film, but it captures the mood of the film and went on to be the cover art for the Criterion Collection edition of the film. We laser etched it onto our suede Henderson Jacket.

The Wild Mustang Horse was pivotal in shaping cowboy culture in the South, with Texas once holding the largest population of wild horses. We wanted to feature this somewhere, so worked it into the taping on our Bronco set and Stampede T-Shirt.

Obviously a huge part of US culture. Travis himself wears cowboy boots throughout the film, at one point swapping a pair with his brother. We took the toe stitching from the boots and reused it as embroidery across our selvedge denim and shirting.

Our season name “The Dust Has Come To Stay” was found in the gas station Travis wanders into at the start of the film, searching for water. We felt it perfectly captured the themes we were carrying across into the design.
