Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas” was released in Japan on VHS as part of the country’s effort to make international arthouse cinema more accessible for home viewing in the 1980s.
In Japan, “Paris, Texas” has been warmly embraced, with several publications comparing Wenders’ style to that of legendary Japanese director Yasujirō Ozu (Tokyo Story) - not for content, but for rhythm, stillness, and the emotional weight of things left unsaid.
Wenders has long cited Ozu’s work as the “holy treasure of cinema.” In 1983, right between planning and shooting “Paris, Texas”, Wenders traveled to Japan to film “Tokyo-Ga”, a documentary searching for the remnants of Ozu’s Tokyo.
